Expressive Portraiture: Color, Layers & Brushwork
Tuesdays · April 7, 14, 21 & 28 · 7–8 PM · $80

This four-week portrait class moves beyond realism and into a more expressive, painterly approach to portraiture. While we’ll cover the foundations, the heart of this class is focused on color theory, layering, and brushwork, using paint as a tool for interpretation rather than exact replication.

Week 1 introduces the basics of portraiture, including proportions, structure, and understanding the face as a set of shapes and planes.
Week 2 focuses on using a transfer method to place your portrait onto paper, allowing us to move past drawing stress and into painting with confidence.
Weeks 3 & 4 are dedicated to exploration, working with paint, color relationships, and a variety of brushes and palette knives to build layers and develop a more artistic, expressive portrait.

This class is ideal for artists who want to loosen up, deepen their understanding of color, and approach portrait painting with curiosity and intention. All supplies are provided, and no prior portrait experience is required.
